This is a
study that is currently being carried on in Australia by a group of academics
including Margot Schofield, Professor of Counselling and Psychotherapy,
La Trobe University; Christine Knauss, Research Fellow, School of Public
Health, La Trobe University; Jan Grant, Associate Professor & Head
of Counselling Psychology, Curtin University of Technology in collaboration
with Professor David E. Orlinsky, University of Chicago; Professor Michael
Helge Rønnestad, University of Oslo, and other colleagues in the
SPR Research Collaborative Research Network.
The study
is part of greater study currently being carried on throughout the world
investigating the practices and training of counsellors and psychotherapists.
The information that will be will gathered will enable the researchers
to consider many factors including the geographical availability of psychotherapists
and counsellors in Australia. It will also produce results that will enable
the government to see many of those who practise these professions who
are not currently recognised by government. The information will also
enable training institutions to consider the structure and duration of
their future training courses in this area and how they can best service
the needs of trainees.
There is
little doubt that statistically the professions of counselling and psychotherapy
are somewhat of a mystery to the Australian government. It only seems
to consider these disciplines as valid if they are practised by people
who practise another primary modality such as psychology, psychiatry or
nursing. Those who are not part of that primary group as a government-registered
professional generally come under the auspice of the allied health professions
and are not included in the Medicare rebates scheme.
Participation
in the online survey is encouraged from members of several professions
including psychologists, psychiatrists, counsellors, psychotherapists,
social workers who practise counselling hypno-psychotherapists and, by
virtual of their therapeutic positioning, hypnotherapists.
The study
takes about an hour to fill in online and can be found at
